The Corner House
Nottingham, UK
The Corner House is a popular shopping, leisure and entertainment complex that dazzles visitors with its colorfully illuminated central stairwell and atrium. Unifying three floors of the complex, it gradually morphs through a sequence of vivid color changes made possible by Color Kinetics’ intelligent LED lighting technology.
Designed and implemented by Lighting Technology Projects (LTP), the bold architectural lighting scheme called for a compact and low-maintenance lighting system that could be discreetly installed. LTP chose ColorBlast® 12 to meet these criteria, and to wash the space with saturated color and dynamic effects. The ground, first and second floors of the building are each illuminated with six ColorBlast 12 units that are strategically positioned on the exterior face of the stairwell drum, where they are hidden from view and capable of throwing far-reaching light with even coverage. Additionally, the dramatically sloping sides of the escalators are lit by 12 ColorBlast 12 units. The top floor of the building functions as a service and office floor, and the stairwell drum’s ceiling is covered by a fabric skin that’s up-lit by 8 ColorBlast 12 units.
The entire lighting scheme, which includes the complementary use of Martin MiniMAC Maestro gobo projectors, is controlled by Light System Manager – Color Kinetics’ Ethernet-based control system.
With its restaurants, bars and 14-screen cinema under one roof, the Corner House offers no shortage of entertainment – even in the stairwell!
