The Peak Tower

Victoria Gap, Hong Kong

The Peak Tower sits on Victoria Peak, the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island. The tourist destination is comprised of an assortment of shops and leading tourist attractions, including several that are innovatively lit by Color Kinetics’ LED technology.

THE EA EXPERIENCE
The EA Experience attracts gamers to a virtual world where they can interact with the latest EA games. The space features a unique egg-shaped dome that’s lit by Color Kinetics’ iColor® Flex SL -- a flexible, LED-based strand of light.

Designed by James Law Cybertecture International Ltd, the lighting scheme is intended to create constantly moving and flowing patterns of light around the dome. Each node of iColor Flex SL can be independently programmed, which allows for dynamic sequences and patterns. The project called for a total of 2,250 nodes to be installed in 6-foot (1.8 m) “U” channels across the barrisol dome which are secured to the structure by metal strips. A variety of lighting effects were created to entice gamers to enter the space.

Once inside the EA Experience, iColor Cove® -- a linear LED-based light fixture -- illuminates two staircases leading to the EA Sports shop. Each staircase, made out of an acrylic detail, contains three pieces of iColor Cove within a 41-inch (1050 mm) space. The iColor Cove units project bold colors of red, white and blue -- coinciding with EA Sports’ corporate colors -- from within the staircase. Both the iColor Flex SL and iColor Cove installations are controlled by Light System Manager, a fully integrated hardware and software solution that provides intelligent LED illumination control for Ethernet-based installations.

PEAK TRAMWAY
The Peak Tower is connected to the city center by the Peak Tramway, a funicular railway that carries both tourists and residents to the upper levels of Hong Kong Island. Tens of millions of people have ridden the Tram, viewing its spectacular perspective of the city. At its peak, Color Kinetics’ technology provides another spectacular scene, displaying a colorful light show for Tram riders.

Located at the upper station, 24 ColorBlast® 12 fixtures are mounted behind a cast cog wheel feature, which greets people as they alight and get on the Peak Tram. Conceptualized by Available Light, the lighting effects change color according to the Tram’s arrival and departure. The ColorBlast 12 fixtures slowly change color as the Tram approaches, simulating that the cogwheels are slowly turning. Upon the Tram’s arrival a chasing rainbow of light appears.

Beyond providing creative and stimulating designs throughout the Tower, the designers cite the benefits of long life source, low heat output and low maintenance requirements as reasons for choosing Color Kinetics’ LED-based fixtures.
