Hotel X

Towering above the streets of Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, InterContinental Hotels Group’s (IHG) new Five-Star Hotel X, which opened in February 2021, reflects the ‘Valley’s’ renown eclectic, lively, and adventurous identity. The distinctive white geometric façade of the unique hotel features a first-of-its-kind, custom façade lighting system that reflects the Valley’s Avant Garde atmosphere.

Color Kinetics partner, bluebottle, was asked to realize a large-scale, integrated façade lighting system at the hotel. LED fixtures were the only choice for the project given its massive scale and deep integration into the building façade. Selected for superb brand reputation, quality, flexibility, low power consumption, and depth and range of color, Color Kinetics iColor Flex LMX gen2 RGB luminaires (now specified with Flex Compact gen3, RGB) (46,000 nodes, 72 mm (4 in) On-Center Node Spacing) were mounted in a custom aluminum channel that comprises part of the building façade. As a result, the hotel’s façade operates as a low-resolution projection screen over the heart of the Valley and perfectly reflects the area’s ultra-cool art and eccentricity.
