Bringing a symbolic bridge to life

Medgidia Bridge was built 40 years ago over the Danube - Black Sea waterway. It is not only an iconic symbol of the city, it also has an important functional role connecting the two parts of the city.

The wish of the mayor and citizens was that this bridge be as full of life during the night as it is during the day since it is visible from almost every part of the city and the water. After refurbishment of functional lighting three years ago, the bridge was illuminated architecturally.

The Medgidia Bridge includes a central structure with a large arch, two support legs, and two lateral structures supported on 13 pillars. The idea was to mimic the effects of the water using an intelligent lighting system that would enable custom light shows to display on special days of the year, such as National Day, religious holidays, and local events.

Color Kinetics iColor Flex LMX gen2 (now specified with Flex Compact gen3, RGB), Color Kinetics ColorGraze MX4 Powercore, and Color Kinetics ColorReach Compact Powercore, RGBW (now specified with ReachElite) luminaires were selected for the project. “The sides of the bridge were illuminated with static blue light. The area between pillars creates an alternation of blue lights and shadows, resembling waves that cross the waterway. Four lines of dynamic light were installed on the interior and exterior of the two arches. The dynamic effects and chromaticity also mimic the moving water. - Coadă-Nicolaescu Daniel, Lighting Application Specialist

“Architectural lighting has an important impact on the way a city is perceived, being more attractive for its citizens and tourists. We hope that the new and refurbished look of the bridge will help increase trade and tourism in the area.” - Cristian Bardu. Key Account Manager Signify Romania
