A video masterpiece lights Izmit Bay

Spanning the Gulf of Izmit 2,620 m (8,595 ft) at its narrowest point, the Osmangazi Bridge is the fourth longest suspension bridge in the world. The majestic structure features a tower height of 252 m (826 ft) from the sea and a deck 36 m (118 ft) wide.

The Turkey General Directorate of Highways sought an energy-efficient way to provide Osmangazi Bridge with a spectacular nighttime identity, while minimizing failure under harsh environmental conditions. A new dynamic LED lighting system commissioned by Certified System Integrator, LumiSistem Lighting & Engineering, displays pixel-based videos, offering the public a captivating light show from near or far.

Color Kinetics luminaires were selected for the project due to an impeccable reputation for quality and durability, particularly on proven bridge installations, where harsh environments and access to luminaires for routine maintenance in large-scale structures can be challenging.

Strands of Color Kinetics iColor Flex LMX gen2 nodes (19,000) (now specified with Flex Compact gen3, RGB) are surface mounted on suspension cables with custom mounting accessories and serve as individually controllable light points to display video content, such as giant birds flying along the length of the bridge. Color Kinetics ArchiPoint iColor Powercore luminaires (212) surface mounted on the horizontal main cables are used as complementary light points to achieve the holistic lighting design. The fixtures are spaced at 60 cm (23 in) intervals. The lighting system is controlled by Color Kinetics Video System Manager Pro, DVI and powered by Color Kinetics Data Enabler Pro and CM-150 CA.

Every evening, Osmangazi Bridge displays a magnificent light show in Izmit Bay. Unique light displays mark special occasions, such as Republic Day, and Ataturk Memorial Day. The new lighting has transformed the bridge into an attraction and created a unique identity for the entire region. Increased light levels have also significantly improved working conditions on the bridge.
