Lübeck's South Specialist Medical Center (FAZ Süd), now in conjunction with the prominent Sana Clinics, is breaking medical ground with its advanced operating facility. The medical center houses over a dozen practices and facilities, including the centrally-located—and integral—South Operating Center (OPZ Süd). The operating center bridges practicing specialist physicians and Sana staff, who use its four operating rooms, creating a collaborative juncture for advancing modern treatment. But that's not the only hybrid element the facility boasts. It also features a dynamic Color Kinetics lighting system that adheres to the stringent demands of a medical facility and promotes the wellbeing of patients and staff.

"Light plays a decisive role here," Andreas Janzen, anesthesiologist and managing director of Lumaris GmbH, the operating center's legal services provider, said. "Our aim is to create an environment that relaxes patients and wins their trust. Simultaneously, it should support the staff in their physiological processes and medical care." Color-changing LED luminaires from Color Kinetics are at the heart of the lighting system that Janzen's team, headed by lighting planner Sabine Mai, chose to fulfill this goal.

Mai decided on Color Kinetics iColor Cove MX Powercore luminaires (now specified with PureStyle Compact Powercore, IntelliHue) to light up several key areas of the operating center because of their versatility. The luminaires produce soft, slow color changes that contribute to a soothing atmosphere in high-intensity, high-anxiety areas such as the anesthetic preparation room, waiting area, and operating zone.

These mood-enhancing luminaires are supplemented by other Philips products, including Rotaris lights, which provide quality background lighting, LED DayWave luminaires, which create a stimulating wave of light in the reception area, and Cleanroom TBS426 fixtures, which conform to the hygiene and sterility standards of the operating rooms.

The complete solution also meets the hospital's budgetary needs: the LED lights significantly reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and maintenance costs.
