    Tradeston Bridge

    Glasgow, Scotland, UK

    Bridging a brighter future

Spanning the River Clyde since 2009, the Tradeston Bridge links the industrial Tradeston district on the south bank of the river to the Broomielaw and the city’s financial hub on the western side of the city center. The unique wave-like pedestrian bridge was visible as part of the backdrop during the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).

Glasgow City Council spearheaded a project to enhance the bridge with dynamic, sustainable, and connected lighting as part of the City Deal ‘Clyde Waterfront and West End Innovation Quarter’ program, which aims to regenerate the river corridor as a desirable urban quarter that attracts jobs, investment, and encourages regional economic growth.

The bridge’s new lighting solution combines vibrant, energy-efficient Color Kinetics LED luminaires with the Interact Landmark connected lighting platform to create dynamic light shows. The handrail was fitted with custom stanchion lighting using strands of Color Kinetics Flex Micro gen3, RGB nodes. The solution is integrated with Color Kinetics CM-150 CA gen2 and Interact Landmark, which enables the lighting system to be monitored, managed, and controlled from a single, secure dashboard. Dynamic lighting effects can be easily programmed and managed remotely to suit the seasons, holidays, and events.

The project was delivered in partnership with Lightways (Contractors) Ltd, specialists in providing exterior lighting throughout Scotland, and includes a five-year lifecycle package managed through Interact Landmark Lighting Asset Management that enables remote and on-site maintenance, as well as energy savings through regular system optimization.

“Light is one of the most powerful means of breathing new life into cities and towns, heralding a new era of urban design and beautification. The new installation at Tradeston Bridge combines cutting-edge design and sustainable LED technology, that ensures energy efficiency, connectivity, and innovation.” - Stephen Rouatt, CEO, Signify UK & Ireland.

“We’ve lit bridges around the world and seen first-hand the positive impact that dynamic architectural lighting has on transforming local communities and economies. Color Kinetics, a scalable and innovative technology, is a perfect solution as it can help achieve a unique vision for the bridge.”
